If you have ever wondered why some fragrances whisper against the skin for a whole day while others shout for an hour and vanish, the answer is often a single word: attar.
Attar, ittar, itr — same thing, many spellings
Attar (Arabic: itr, meaning fragrance) is a concentrated perfume oil that contains no alcohol. You will see it spelled attar, ittar, itr or itar — they all refer to the same tradition of natural perfumery that has flourished in India for centuries, above all in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh.
What attar is made of
Traditional attars begin with botanicals — rose petals, saffron threads, oud wood, vetiver roots, jasmine, even monsoon earth. These are distilled slowly and captured in a base oil, where the fragrance matures like a fine spirit. No alcohol, no aerosol, no rush.
How attar differs from spray perfume
- Concentration: attars are pure perfume oil, far more concentrated than a typical eau de parfum spray.
- Sillage: attars sit close to the skin — an intimate scent bubble rather than a room-filling cloud. If you want bold projection, an alcohol-based perfume is the better tool.
- Longevity: because oil evaporates slower than alcohol, a good attar can last 8–12 hours on skin.
- Skin feel: no alcohol means no sting and no drying — one reason attars are loved by people with sensitive skin.

How to choose your first attar
Start with a classic accord and let your skin decide:
- Mahtab — moonlit white florals, soft musk and warm amber: luminous and delicate.
- Anbar — ambergris, sandalwood and benzoin: warm, smooth, quietly addictive.
- Sehr — fresh marine, cedar and white musk: an attar for people who think they don't like attars.
